Thursday evening (Aug 27) hike up Pilot Butte to observe partial lunar eclipse. What better way to observe the partial lunar eclipse than the 'Butt-te-ful' view atop Pilot butte. We will meet and start from Pilot Butte parking lot. From there we will hike the Larkspur Trail to the Pilot Butte Nature Trail trailhead.
Sun sets at 7:49 PM; Moon rises at 7:41 PM. Partial lunar eclipse commences at 6:23 PM with maximum obscuration at 9:13 PM. All PDT times.
Be prepared to hike (descend) in the dark (headlamps mandatory). Wear/bring appropriate clothing and footwear for night time hiking as temperature cools down.
Distance: ~1.5 mile out, 1.5 mile return ~1.0 hours hiking time. 0 min drive to trailhead.
Elevation gain/loss: 456 feet of gain
What to bring: Ten essentials, water, snack/lunch, and proper footwear (no tennis shoes or sandals), spare clothing for temperature drop and wind. Headlamp mandatory.
Dogs are not allowed on this hike.
Difficulty level: Easy
Number of hikers: 12 hikers including the hike leader. Registration is required.
Carpooling: No carpooling necessary. We hike from the meeting place.
Meeting place: Pilot Butte Middle School parking lot. 1501 NE Neff Road, Bend. Note: Pilot Butte State Park parking lot closes at dusk.
