Commercial thinning and fuels reduction work has been ongoing in the area near the Nordeen, South Swede and Vista Butte ski trails this summer. The work is now paused because of fire danger, and we have permission to go into these areas to assess what’s been done and determine what we need to do to get the ski trails in shape for winter. We won’t be hanging markers, since the logging work may resume when fire danger is reduced. This will primarily be a walk in the woods to assess how many markers are needed to make the trails easy to follow, and determine if there are downed trees that require logout on the parts of the trail that are not within the cutting boundary.

We have three areas that need to be surveyed; this week I am hoping to have enough volunteers to cover two of them: the Swede Loop and the Nordeen Loop. With two or three people in each group we’ll have enough people to do a good assessment.

What to bring: please ensure you have the following required PPE:

- hard hat (let me know if you need one)

- Sturdy footwear

- Long sleeved shirt and long pants

- Eye protection

The only tools we’ll be hauling will be hammers and small hand saws.

Carpooling: Meet at the Cascade Lakes Welcome Center at 8:30 to sort out carpooling. Contact me if you want to meet us at the Swampy Lakes Sno-Park instead.

NOTE: if it’s smoky, we will postpone, and if it’s expected to be hot we may start earlier. I’ll be in touch with those that register on Tuesday to confirm plans.
