Swampy Intermediate Ski
The snow has finally started!!! The current plan is to do a loop at Swampy, heading up the south side of Ridge Loop, taking Shelter Trail -> Crosscut -> Flagline -> Swampy Loop. We can stop at the Swampy Shelter for lunch/snack before deciding which side of Swampy Loop to use to return to the sno-park . Conditions may require an adjustment to this plan.
Level of Difficulty and Distance/Time expected: Intermediate level tour, 5.5 to 6 miles. It is about 35 minutes to drive to the trailhead. The ski should take 3-4 hours. Early season conditions may add additional challenges.
When: Friday, January 9
Meeting place/time: We'll meet at The Grove (921 NW Mt Washington Drive, Bend), inside the food hall at the south end in front of Thump Coffee. We will meet at 9:00 am to sign waivers and set up carpools. Departure for the sno-park no later than 9:15, so if you want a coffee, come a little early.
What to bring:
● Ten Essentials. Including tools & straps for ski/boot repairs.
● Proper winter clothing for insulation and protection from wind and rain. Dress in layers. No cotton!
● Glide wax, extra phone battery.
● Water, snack/lunch. Snacks and lunch are often eaten outside. Bring food that can be easily eaten quickly in case it is cold. (We will try to be at the Swampy Shelter for lunch.)
Dogs are not allowed.
Ski Equipment: Cross country nordic skis and poles suitable for off track skiing. We might have the opportunity to break trail through fresh snow.
Skis should have a no-wax pattern for grip and metal edges for control on ice or hard pack conditions. Wider skis will provide better stability in more difficult conditions
Boots should be over the ankle for support and control, and must be compatible with the bindings on the skis. Poles should have large baskets so they don't sink in soft snow.
Skis, boots, and poles designed exclusively for skiing on machine groomed tracks are not allowed on this tour.
Number of skiers: 8 Skiers
